Arab American communities have not been the focal point of comprehensive health studies, and the absence of targeted health programs in California poses a notable gap in addressing the unique needs of this population. Significantly, Arab American women face elevated risks of breast cancer owing to various factors. In an endeavor to mitigate and forestall these risks utilizing safe and supportive methodologies tailored for Arab American women, we propose the implementation of a one-year pilot study.
In collaboration with Holistic Underground and Communities Upwards, and in partnership with the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation of California (PIRE-CA), our initiative builds upon our recent engagement with a cohort of Arab American women in the realm of smoking cessation and prevention. This proposed study aims to assist participants in monitoring air quality within their residences, revealing potential exposure to tobacco smoke even in the absence of active smoking. Moreover, we will collaboratively explore environments where women feel both comfortable and uncomfortable engaging in physical activity, with an intent to enhance conditions. Our approach includes advocacy initiatives, such as engaging with apartment managers to promote smoke-free living environments and liaising with municipal authorities to ensure cultural safety in recreation centers. Furthermore, we will forge alliances with other advocacy groups to collectively champion these enhancements.
Our methodology extends beyond data collection to empower participants in utilizing evidence derived from their own experiences, fostering the development of health leadership skills and bolstering confidence. Rigorous evaluation mechanisms will be employed to assess program efficacy for participants, and findings will inform the design of a comprehensive community program dedicated to the primary prevention of breast cancer among Arab American women in California.
